Open letter regarding Ontario Fall Economic Statement

Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers’ Association and Labour Issues Coordinating Committee

The Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers’ Association (OFVGA) and the Labour Issues Coordinating Committee (LICC) appreciate the provincial government’s recognition of the importance of the edible horticulture sector to the provincial economy and its unique position of competing as a price-taker in the global market.

The focused support announced in the Fall Economic Statement will help Ontario fruit and vegetable growers address challenges to their competitiveness beyond their control such as higher energy costs, cap and trade, and pending provincial labour changes. OFVGA and LICC are currently seeking more information on the details of the support and will work collaboratively with the government on roll-out and implementation.

It is the hope of OFVGA and LICC that the government’s recognition of the sector’s importance to the provincial economy and local agricultural production will be reflected in Bill 148, and both organizations will continue to work with all political parties on this important issue.

Ontario's agriculture sector needs ongoing predictability and stability with respect to major policy decisions with on-farm impact in order to continue to make long-term investments into its future growth and competitiveness.
